Monterey Park, Los Angeles County
In the 1970s a developer named Frederic Hsieh began promoting Monterey Park to buyers in Taiwan and Hong Kong, and within two decades it became the first city on the American mainland with an Asian majority. Lily Lee Chen, elected in 1983, was the first Chinese American woman to serve as mayor of a United States city. Atlantic and Garvey boulevards are lined with Chinese restaurants and markets.
